Contemporary Art in Asia: Traditions/Tensions New Asian art is challenging and provocative, capable of both staunch traditionalism and dazzling innovation. This book, the catalogue of a traveling exhibition organized by the Asia Society Galleries, New York City, features the work of 27 artists from five countries. Their work confronts the reservation or eclipse of tradition, the increasing globalization, the rapid modernization, and the changing relationships with the West and within Asia that are major factors in all contemporary Asian Societies. The superbly illustrated art section features some 60 installations, paintings, and sculptures, and often includes multiple views. Many of the artists have not been previously published outside Asia, making the catalogue an important resource. (Visit this online exhibition for additional information as well as numerous images and bios of featured artists.)

Inside Out: New Chinese Art This exhibition, which the New York Times called "a benchmark achievement", ran from September 15, 1998 through January 3, 1999 and now travels for several years to San Francisco, Mexico and elsewhere. Inside Out presented the dynamic new art being produced by artists in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and by selected artists who emigrated to the West in the late 1980s. This section contains substantial information including more than 20 images; a full checklist of every work in the show; information on two specially commissioned pieces by Cai Guo-qiang and Wenda Gu; a work in progress by the artist Xu Bing available only on our website; a chronology of the development of contemporary Chinese art in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan; biographies of the artists; a selected bibliography citing more than 150 articles, books and catalogues and more.
