Contemporary
Art in Asia: Traditions/Tensions New Asian art is challenging and provocative,
capable of both staunch traditionalism and dazzling innovation. This
book, the catalogue of a traveling exhibition organized by the Asia
Society Galleries, New York City, features the work of 27 artists from
five countries. Their work confronts the reservation or eclipse of tradition,
the increasing globalization, the rapid modernization, and the changing
relationships with the West and within Asia that are major factors in
all contemporary Asian Societies. The superbly illustrated art section
features some 60 installations, paintings, and sculptures, and often
includes multiple views. Many of the artists have not been previously
published outside Asia, making the catalogue an important resource.
