"Close the Door & Raise the Flag" Acrylic on canvas, 1999 55" x 39.5"

Born in Mojokerto, East Java, in April of 1973, Popok is another rising star from the Indonesian Art Institute in Yogyakarta, Popok is also a member of Apotik Komik, the group which exhibits on empty walls in the streets of Yogyakarta. Popok says that his approach to making art is to express "My personal opinion about the environment in which I live, think and walk with the freedom that surrounds me."

Popok's dynamic canvases are life-sized frames from a sinister comic book. His talents as a comic book illustrator are evident in both his illustrative painting style and narrative imagery. Each of Popok's paintings condenses a whole comic strip into individual action packed canvases. He often makes work that represents the lunacy of the current political situation with the country.
